From bullshitopedia

Gaslighting means manipulating someone into doubting their own memory, perception or sanity. On Bullshitopedia, cases are tagged with gaslighting when people in power, or people with something to hide, told the public, victims or witnesses that what they saw, knew or lived through was not real.

The word comes from Patrick Hamilton's 1938 play Gas Light and its film versions, especially George Cukor's 1944 film Gaslight, in which a husband dims the gas lamps of their London home and insists his wife is imagining it, to make her believe she is going mad.
