Category:Official cover stories
Official cover stories are cases where a government or public authority told the public something that its own records, a public inquiry, a court or later official admission proved false.
Every case in this collection rests on that kind of evidence: declassified documents, sworn testimony, inquiry reports, court judgments or a government's own correction. The collection spans administrations of both major US parties and governments in Britain, France, the Soviet Union, Japan, China, Australia and elsewhere, because official deception is not the habit of one country or party.
Many of these cases are also examples of gaslighting: the public, victims or witnesses were told that what they saw or knew was not true.
