World Trade Center 7, a 47-story office tower north of the Twin Towers, collapsed at 5:20 p.m. on September 11, 2001. No plane hit it. Because it fell hours after the towers and appeared to drop straight down, it became the centerpiece of claims that the buildings were demolished with explosives.
A federal engineering investigation concluded that uncontrolled fires, started by debris from the North Tower, caused the collapse.
What the evidence shows
- NIST findings. The National Institute of Standards and Technology's 2008 report found that fires burned unchecked for about seven hours because the water supply for sprinklers had been cut. Heat caused floor beams to expand and push a girder off its seat, leading to the failure of a key column, number 79, and a progressive collapse.
- First of its kind. NIST described it as the first known case of a tall building collapsing primarily because of fire.
- No explosives. NIST found no evidence of blast events. A demolition large enough to bring down the building would have produced sounds and visible damage that recordings did not capture.
- The BBC report. A BBC broadcast reported the building's collapse about 20 minutes before it happened, based on confused information about warnings from firefighters, who had expected it to fall.
- Counter-study. A 2020 study by a University of Alaska Fairbanks team, funded by Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth, disputed NIST's conclusions. It has not changed the engineering consensus.
Why it matters
WTC 7 shows how an unfamiliar engineering failure can be read as evidence of a plot. Firefighters on the scene expected the collapse hours before it happened.
