The claim that the FBI orchestrated the January 6 attack stretches a real finding, that informants were present, into a claim of FBI direction.
What the evidence shows
- Informants were present. The Justice Department Inspector General's December 2024 report found 26 confidential human sources in Washington that day.
- They did not direct events. Four entered the Capitol and 13 entered the restricted area. Twenty-three came on their own, and none was authorized to break the law or encourage others to.
- No undercover employees. The review found no undercover FBI employees in the crowd.
- Real failures. The report also found the FBI missed a basic step in its preparation.
Why it persists
The Inspector General's confirmation that sources were present is real, and it is easy to omit the rest of the finding.
Lessons for readers
- "Present" and "orchestrated" are different words. Check which one the source uses.
