Many children have been told, usually as a joke, that swallowing a watermelon seed will make a watermelon grow inside them. Some young children take it seriously and become frightened.
What the evidence shows
- No growing conditions. Seeds need soil, light and the right conditions to sprout. The stomach's acid and the digestive process do not allow a seed to germinate.
- What happens. Swallowed seeds are either broken down or pass through the digestive system.
- Safe to eat. Watermelon seeds are edible and are sold roasted as a snack in many countries.
Why it matters
It is a gentle joke for most children, but very young children can take such stories literally. It is a good example to use when teaching children to ask "how would that work?"
