The claim that Georgia absentee ballot signatures were never checked was tested through a signature audit ordered by the Secretary of State.
What the evidence shows
- An audit was conducted. In December 2020 Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger ordered a review of absentee envelopes in Cobb County, covering 15,118 envelopes, about ten percent of the total.
- No fraudulent ballots were found. The audit, supported by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, found no fraudulent absentee ballots, with accuracy of about 99.99 percent.
- Minor issues. Two ballots should have been flagged for a cure notice.
Why it persists
Signature matching is a subjective process, and a claim of "no checking" is hard to disprove from the outside.
Lessons for readers
- Ask whether anyone has re-checked the process, and what they found.
