In December 2021, posts spread warning that a TikTok "challenge" would bring shooting and bomb threats to schools nationwide on December 17. Many schools increased police presence, and some closed or held remote classes. Some students stayed home.

TikTok and federal authorities found no evidence that such a challenge existed on the platform.

What the evidence shows

  • Platform search. TikTok said it had searched thoroughly and found no evidence of threats originating or spreading on TikTok, only content warning about them.
  • Federal view. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security said they had no information indicating a specific, credible threat.
  • Self-fulfilling. Warnings about the supposed challenge spread far more widely than any original threat, and some schools reported copycat threats.

Why it matters

Viral warnings can cause the harm they warn about: fear, closures and copycat threats. Checking with schools and authorities before sharing helps break that cycle.
