The claim that videos show Biden wandering off at the G7 spread in June 2024, as concerns about President Joe Biden's age were central to the presidential campaign. A widely shared clip from the G7 summit in Puglia, Italy, on June 13 appeared to show Biden turning away from a group of leaders and drifting off. A longer video showed he had turned to give a thumbs-up to a parachutist who had just landed during a skydiving demonstration. Days later, a clip from a fundraiser in Los Angeles appeared to show Biden freezing before former President Barack Obama led him off the stage; fuller footage showed a pause of a few seconds amid applause. The White House called the clips "cheap fakes." Two weeks later, Biden's halting performance in a televised debate on June 27 prompted widespread concern among his own party, and he withdrew from the race on July 21, 2024.

The claims

The New York Post published the G7 clip with a headline suggesting Biden had wandered off and had to be guided back by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The Republican National Committee and others posted versions. The Los Angeles clip, from a June 15 event featuring Obama, actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts, and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, was presented as showing Biden frozen and confused.

What the evidence shows

  • The G7 video. Wider footage of the skydiving demonstration showed several parachutists landing near the leaders. Biden turned toward one who had landed nearby and gave a thumbs-up before rejoining the group. The cropped version removed the parachutist from view.
  • The fundraiser video. Longer footage showed Biden standing on stage during applause at the end of the event for several seconds before Obama took his arm and they walked off together. Whether the pause indicated anything significant was a matter of interpretation; the clip as framed suggested more than it showed.
  • Fact-checkers. Fact-checking organizations rated the framing of the G7 clip as misleading or lacking context.
  • The broader question. Questions about Biden's age and stamina were legitimate and widely shared, including among Democrats. After the June 27 debate, many Democratic leaders and commentators called on him to withdraw, and he did so in July. Later reporting and books examined how aides had managed his public appearances and schedule.

Why it matters

The episode shows that misleading clips and legitimate concerns can coexist. Selectively cropped videos exaggerated specific moments, and the White House was right that some clips lacked context. At the same time, dismissing all concerns as "cheap fakes" proved untenable after the debate. Readers need to evaluate each piece of evidence on its merits, rather than accepting or rejecting all evidence according to partisan expectations.

Lessons for readers

  • Look for wider footage before drawing conclusions from a short clip.
  • Ask what is outside the frame.
  • A misleading clip does not prove the underlying concern is false, nor does it prove it true.
  • Apply the same skepticism to clips about politicians of all parties.
  • Be cautious when either side dismisses all critical evidence as fake.
