Narendra Modi, born in 1950 in Vadnagar, Gujarat, has often said that as a boy he helped his father sell tea at the town's railway station. The story is central to his political image as a self-made "chaiwala" (tea seller).
In 2017 critics claimed the story was impossible because Vadnagar station only opened in 1973, when Modi was already in his twenties. That claim is wrong. The tea-selling story itself still rests mainly on Modi's own account.
What the evidence shows
- Station history. Western Railway records show the Mehsana–Vadnagar line opened on March 21, 1887, built by the princely state of Baroda. The station existed throughout Modi's childhood. BOOM rated the 1973 claim False.
- The tea stall story. Accounts of Modi's childhood come largely from Modi, his family and acquaintances interviewed after he became prominent. No contemporary record independently confirms or contradicts them.
- Promotion. In 2017 the government announced plans to restore the station and the tea stall as tourist attractions.
Why it matters
A claim debunking a politician's origin story can itself be false. The station existed; whether the boy at the tea stall was Modi rests on testimony rather than records, as most childhood stories do.
