In 2016, messages spread across WhatsApp and social media claiming that UNESCO had declared Prime Minister Narendra Modi the "best prime minister in the world." The claim has resurfaced several times since, sometimes with new dates.
UNESCO does not rank or award political leaders, and it never issued such a statement.
What the evidence shows
- No such award. UNESCO's mandate covers education, science and culture. It has no program for rating heads of government, and its official records contain no such announcement.
- Fact checks. BOOM, Factly and others traced the claim to unsourced forwards and rated it false each time it was revived.
- A pattern. Similar viral hoaxes have claimed UNESCO declared India's national anthem the world's best, and the ₹2,000 note the "best currency." None were real.
Why it matters
Invoking an international body lends false authority to a political message. The UNESCO name is a recurring choice for such hoaxes in India.
