After Hurricane Helene in 2024, claims spread that the government had created or steered the storm, sometimes said to clear land for mining or to target Republican-leaning areas. No technology exists that can create or steer a hurricane.
The claim
Posts cited weather-modification patents, cloud seeding and HAARP as evidence.
What the evidence shows
- Scale. A mature hurricane releases energy on a scale far beyond any human technology.
- Cloud seeding. Cloud seeding can modestly increase precipitation from existing clouds under some conditions; it cannot create or direct hurricanes.
- Forecasting. Helene's path was forecast days in advance by meteorologists using public models.
- History. US government experiments to weaken hurricanes, Project Stormfury, ended in 1983 without success.
