Children are taught to color the Sun yellow. Astronomers also call it a 'yellow dwarf' star. Many people take this to mean the Sun's light is yellow.
The verdict is misleading. Educators and fact-checkers say the Sun's visible light is a mix of all colors, which looks white to human eyes. Earth's atmosphere can make it look yellow, orange or red.
What the evidence shows
[edit]- Stanford Solar Center. The Stanford Solar Center calls it a common misconception that the Sun is yellow, orange or red. It says the Sun is all colors mixed together, which looks white to our eyes.
- Newsweek fact check. Newsweek examined a viral tweet saying the Sun is white but looks yellow because of the atmosphere. It found that, in terms of how humans see it, the Sun is white. It also notes that 'yellow dwarf' is a misnomer that does not describe how the Sun looks.
- Atmospheric effects. Low in the sky at sunrise and sunset, the Sun can look yellow, orange or red, per Stanford. The Rayleigh scattering explanation is that blue light scatters away more than red and yellow.
- Space-based views. Stanford's page includes a photo of the Sun from the International Space Station showing it white. It also says scientists often tint solar images with bright colors for display.
Why it matters
[edit]The claim lasts because it is repeated in art, school and everyday speech. It is also partly right, because the Sun can look yellow from the ground. The 'yellow dwarf' label adds confusion. It shows how a technical term can mislead the public.
