The Sun is often called a ball of fire or said to be burning. A common follow-up is 'how can it burn in space without oxygen?'

The verdict is misleading. The Sun gives off heat and light, but the source is nuclear fusion, not combustion. Fire is a chemical reaction with oxygen. The Sun is a ball of plasma.

What the evidence shows

[edit]
  • Fusion, not combustion. Sky at Night Magazine says the Sun is not on fire or burning. Most of its energy comes from fusing hydrogen into helium deep in the core, where temperature and pressure are huge.
  • Plasma, not flame. NASA says the Sun is made of plasma and has no solid surface. Science Times says its light and heat come from nuclear fusion rather than combustion.
  • Why no oxygen is needed. Space Daily notes that fire is a fuel reacting with an oxidizer such as oxygen. Fusion does not work that way, so no oxygen is needed.
  • Old ideas about burning. Sky at Night Magazine says the Sun's heat and light were once attributed to molten metal or burning coal. The fire picture is an old idea.
  • Mass loss. The same magazine says the Sun loses about 4.26 million tonnes of mass every second to fusion. That is a tiny fraction of its total mass.

Why it matters

[edit]

The claim spreads because the Sun looks and feels like fire, and everyday speech calls it 'burning'. The word 'burn' has more than one meaning. The mix-up matters because it hides how stars really work.
