The claim that the January 6 Capitol attack was a peaceful protest is contradicted by video, court records and police injury reports.
The claim
Trump and some allies have described the people who entered the Capitol as peaceful patriots and the day as "a day of love."
What the evidence shows
- Violence. About 140 police officers were injured. Rioters used flagpoles, chemical spray and other weapons, and broke windows and doors to enter
- Convictions. More than 1,500 people were charged, and hundreds were convicted or pleaded guilty, including to assaulting police and seditious conspiracy
- The certification. Congress was forced to halt the counting of electoral votes and evacuate
- Pardons. On January 20, 2025, Trump pardoned or commuted the sentences of nearly all January 6 defendants. Pardons do not change the trial records
Why it matters
Rewriting a violent attack on the transfer of power as a peaceful protest makes political violence easier to excuse and repeat.
