Trump and allies have often called the Russia investigations a hoax. Some versions say Russia did nothing at all to affect the 2016 election. Other versions say only that the collusion story was false.
The claim that Russian interference itself was a hoax is false. A Republican-led Senate committee, the Mueller investigation and the intelligence community all found that Russia interfered. The separate claim that Trump conspired with Russia was not established, and the FBI's handling of the case drew real criticism.
What the evidence shows
[edit]- Bipartisan Senate findings. The Senate report endorsed the intelligence community's core conclusions that Russia interfered on a grand scale and that Putin directed the interference. Then-acting chairman Marco Rubio's statement directly refuted Trump's repeated claims that the interference was a hoax.
- Intelligence assessment upheld. The Senate Intelligence Committee reaffirmed the accuracy and integrity of the 2017 assessment that Russia's campaign was meant to benefit Trump.
- Mueller on interference. Mueller's report found that the Kremlin tried to interfere in the election for Trump's benefit.
- Fact-checkers. PolitiFact said Trump has falsely referred to investigations into 2016 election interference as the Russia "hoax".
- Criticism of the FBI. The Justice Department inspector general concluded the FBI was justified in opening its investigation. He also listed significant inaccuracies or omissions in the first surveillance application. Barr and Durham described the investigation as based on "the thinnest of suspicions". Criticism of how the FBI acted is separate from the question of whether Russia interfered.
Why it matters
[edit]The word "hoax" blends three separate questions: whether Russia interfered, whether Trump's campaign conspired with it, and whether the FBI acted properly. Official findings differ on each. Treating them as one question lets true criticism of the FBI be used to deny well-documented Russian interference.
