Michel de Nostredame, known as Nostradamus, published Les Prophéties in 1555. It contains 942 four-line poems. Fans have long said these verses foretold wars, disasters and the rise and fall of leaders.
The verses are vague and have no dates. Reviewers find that the claimed hits are matched to events after they happen. Rating: Unsupported. No verified case shows a clear prediction that was understood before the event it supposedly described.
What the evidence shows
[edit]- Post-dictions, not predictions. Live Science says Nostradamus made statements that appear to come true only after the events have already happened. If he had truly foreseen events such as 9/11 or World War II, it says, the world should have known decades or centuries earlier.
- Elastic readings. History.co.uk says that for every claimed hit there is a long trail of claims that did not happen or that rested on readings too elastic to hold up against the facts.
- Vague and mixed languages. The quatrains lack chronological order and mix French, Greek, Latin and Occitan. Critics say this makes it easy to apply them after the fact to a wide range of events.
- Translation problems. History.co.uk notes that much of the Nostradamus text people read, especially online, has been dubiously translated at least twice. That adds more room for reading in a meaning.
- Used as propaganda. One account says Joseph Goebbels used Nostradamus passages as propaganda to suggest that Nazi success was written in the stars. This shows how the verses could be bent to suit any side.
Why it matters
[edit]Nostradamus is one of the most quoted 'prophets' in popular culture. His fame depends on readers fitting vague poetry to events they already know about. Each new crisis brings new claims, and many of them are outright fakes. Knowing how the trick works helps readers judge any prophecy that is offered after the fact.
