The claim that Melania Trump graduated with an architecture degree appeared on her 2016 website biography. It was not supported, and the page was taken down after reporters questioned it.
What the evidence shows
- The bio. Her website said she had a degree in design and architecture from a 'university in Slovenia.'
- No record. CBS News and Snopes found no record that she graduated from the University of Ljubljana, the school the claim was generally linked to. The bio never named a school.
- What was supported. GQ reported she passed a difficult entrance exam and enrolled in architecture, then left after a year to model in Milan and Paris. Her biographers described her as a dropout.
- The aftermath. The website was deleted in July 2016 as the claim was challenged.
Why it persists
Biography claims go unchecked until a person becomes newsworthy. Supporters correctly note she did study and succeeded as a model; critics focus on the inaccurate credential.
Lessons for readers
- Credentials can be checked with the school.
- A false credential is different from an unflattering truth.
- Look for the original wording before judging the claim.
