The claim that Ivanka Trump's fashion brand is made in America was undercut by customs and shipping records showing most production was overseas.
What the evidence shows
- The investigation. The Washington Post traced products to factories in Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, China and Vietnam using customs and shipping data.
- China. Her products were made in more than two dozen Chinese factories since 2010, shipping data showed.
- Disclosure. The brand and its licensee G-III did not disclose where its goods were made and declined to name factories.
- Context. Donald Trump said in June 2016 that his ties were made in China. Most U.S. apparel is made abroad; the issue was the gap between the message and the practice.
Why it persists
The brand's marketing emphasized women's empowerment and American jobs. Defenders note the brand was licensed and common for the industry; critics note the mismatch with the administration's rhetoric.
Lessons for readers
- Look at labels and customs records, not slogans.
- A common business practice can still conflict with a public message.
- Check the company's own disclosure.
