After the first 2016 presidential debate, social media posts circulated close-up images of Hillary Clinton claiming to show a device in her ear. Later posts claimed she had a hidden wire under her clothing or received hand signals.
No evidence supported any of these claims. The "earpiece" was light reflecting off her ear and the stage lighting.
What the evidence shows
- Image analysis. Higher-resolution footage of the debate shows no device in her ear. Fact-checkers traced the viral images to low-resolution screen captures.
- Debate rules. The Commission on Presidential Debates' rules and the candidates' agreements prohibited outside assistance. Neither campaign nor the moderators reported a violation.
- A recurring rumor. Similar claims were made about George W. Bush in 2004, based on a bulge in his jacket, and about other candidates since.
Why it matters
Debate-cheating rumors offer an easy explanation for a performance supporters dislike. They rely on blurry images and can usually be checked against the full broadcast.
