After losing the 25 October 2026 presidential runoff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Flávio Bolsonaro posted a letter on 28 October. It first called him the true president-elect of Brazil. About an hour later he deleted it and posted a version that called him the leader of Brazil.
The official count does not support the claim. Lula won, and the electoral court proclaimed the result. The claim that Bolsonaro is president-elect is false.
What the evidence shows
[edit]- Official result. The electoral court (TSE) gave Lula 64,256,232 votes, or 51.79% of valid votes. Flávio Bolsonaro got 59,826,041, or 48.21%. CNN Brasil notes that the TSE president who proclaimed the result, Kassio Nunes Marques, was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2020 by Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio's father.
- Wording withdrawn. The senator deleted the first version and replaced the phrase with "leader of Brazil". Reuters-based reports say he kept his claim that the election was illegitimate.
- Own side rejects it. Reports say the result was recognised by the electoral court, global leaders, international observers and Bolsonaro's own Liberal Party. His campaign coordinator Rogério Marinho said there was no proof of fraud, and party leader Valdemar Costa Neto said "No one approves" of the letter.
- Fact-checks. A Brazilian media fact-check said the official results show Lula won and that the letter offered no evidence of fraud in the count.
Why it matters
[edit]Declaring victory without an official result is a familiar way to challenge an election outcome. The letter was quickly contradicted by electoral officials and by members of the senator's own camp. The speed of the retreat shows how weak the claim was.
