In the finale of True Lies, Harry Tasker flies a Harrier jet around a Miami skyscraper to rescue his daughter. The effects were designed to look as real as possible. Many viewers have asked whether Schwarzenegger actually flew a real jet.

He did not. The cockpit and skyscraper shots used a full-size model of the jet, mounted on rigs and cranes. Real Harrier footage was used in parts of the film, but the star was not flying one.

What the evidence shows

[edit]
  • Model on a gimbal. In a 2024 behind-the-scenes clip reported by Variety, Cameron and effects supervisor John Bruno explain that they built a life-size model of the Harrier. They put it on a gimbal on top of a real Miami skyscraper.
  • Seven thousand pounds. SlashFilm reports that effects crews hoisted a scale model Harrier above a real Miami street, because a real jet would have been too heavy and expensive. It was moved by a computerized motion-control system.
  • Mix of real and fake. A Volo Museum article says the answer to whether Schwarzenegger piloted a real Harrier is no. It says the footage combined real Harrier footage with visual effects.
  • Real jets did appear. JoBlo reports that real Marine Corps pilots and Harriers were provided for the bridge sequence, and roads were closed to film it. A full-scale model was built for the cockpit shots.

Why it matters

[edit]

The film's effects team chose practical methods over green screen so the stunts would feel real. That worked well enough that viewers still ask what was real. The case shows how convincing special effects can leave lasting false impressions about what actors did on set.
