The claim that hydroxychloroquine is a proven COVID-19 cure went viral in July 2020 through a video featuring Dr. Stella Immanuel. Donald Trump Jr. shared it, and Twitter temporarily limited his account.
What the evidence shows
- What the video said. Immanuel claimed hydroxychloroquine 'works early and as a prophylactic' and said she had treated hundreds of patients. The video also said masks were not needed.
- Platforms acted. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube removed the video for misleading COVID-19 claims. On July 28, 2020, Twitter limited Trump Jr.'s account for 12 hours under its COVID-19 misinformation policy. It was not suspended permanently.
- The science. The FDA revoked its emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine in June 2020 after concluding it was unlikely to be effective and carried risks. The large UK RECOVERY trial found no benefit for hospitalized patients, and later randomized trials did not show a prophylactic benefit large enough to support the claim.
- Masks. Public health agencies kept recommending masks in 2020 as one layer of protection.
Why it persists
The video combined a credentialed speaker, a hopeful message and distrust of institutions. Official reversals on other pandemic questions made some viewers discount the FDA's reversal here.
Lessons for readers
- A medical degree is not evidence; look for controlled trials.
- Early, small, uncontrolled reports often fail when tested properly.
- A platform restriction is a policy decision, not a scientific verdict.
