The claim that '''Zelenskyy bought a $42 million nuclear bunker in Canada''' spread on social media on October 22, 2026, attributed to the Canadian newspaper the ''Toronto Sun''. Videos and posts bearing the newspaper's logo said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had secretly bought a Cold War–era nuclear bunker in Nova Scotia. The ''Toronto Sun'' said the story was fake. It had been published on a lookalike website, toronto-sun.ca, registered just eight days earlier, rather than on the newspaper's real site, torontosun.com. The bunker photograph showed a real renovation project unconnected to Zelenskyy. The story fits a long-running pattern of fabricated claims that Zelenskyy has spent Western aid on luxury properties and goods.

== The claim ==
The impostor article said Zelenskyy had bought an underground bunker about 70 miles north of Halifax, built to shelter leaders during a nuclear strike, from a private owner who had acquired it in 2013. It cited a provincial property registry, which is paywalled and mainly used by legal professionals, making the claim difficult for ordinary readers to check. Social media videos repeating the story used the ''Toronto Sun'' logo to make it look like genuine news.

== What the evidence shows ==
* '''The newspaper denied it.''' Kevin Hann, deputy editor of the ''Toronto Sun'', told Lead Stories the content was fake. Searches of the newspaper's real website and social media accounts found no such report.
* '''An impostor domain.''' WHOIS records showed that toronto-sun.ca had been registered about eight days before the story appeared, a common feature of disinformation campaigns that create disposable lookalike sites.
* '''A real but unrelated bunker.''' The photograph used came from a stock photo site and showed the Debert Diefenbunker in Debert, Nova Scotia, a former Cold War emergency government facility being converted into privately owned suites, as reported by Forbes and CBC. There is no connection to Zelenskyy.
* '''No credible reporting.''' No established news outlet reported such a purchase.

== A recurring narrative ==
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, fact-checkers have debunked many fabricated stories claiming that Zelenskyy or his family bought villas, yachts, luxury cars, jewelry or other expensive assets, often using fake news sites that impersonate real Western outlets. Researchers have linked many such stories to Russian influence operations, including the campaign known as Doppelganger, which cloned the websites of real newspapers, and the network known as Storm-1516. The aim is to suggest that Western military and financial aid is being stolen, undermining public support for Ukraine. Lead Stories did not attribute this particular article to a specific operation.

== Why it persists ==
* '''Borrowed credibility.''' A familiar newspaper name and logo make a story seem legitimate.
* '''Hard-to-check details.''' Citing a paywalled registry gives an appearance of documentation while discouraging verification.
* '''A ready audience.''' People who oppose aid to Ukraine are primed to believe stories of corruption.
* '''Disposable sites.''' Lookalike domains are cheap to register and abandon.

== Lessons for readers ==
* Check the exact web address. Impostor sites often add a hyphen or change the domain ending.
* Look for the story on the outlet's official website and social media accounts.
* Reverse image search photographs used as evidence.
* Be especially cautious of stories about foreign leaders' luxury purchases, a common disinformation theme.
* Notice when a story cites sources that are difficult for ordinary readers to access.
