The claim that '''the 2002 Olympic pairs skating result was judged fairly''' collapsed within days of the competition. Russians Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze won gold by a 5–4 vote of the judges despite a visible error in their free skate, while Canadians Jamie Salé and David Pelletier skated cleanly and won silver. The crowd booed and commentators were outraged. French judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne reportedly said that she had been pressured by the head of the French skating federation to vote for the Russians, in an alleged deal in which a Russian judge would support the French team in the ice dancing competition. The International Skating Union (ISU) suspended both officials, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded a second set of gold medals to the Canadians.

== The claim ==
Initially, skating officials defended the judges' discretion, noting that figure skating scores were subjective and that the Russians' program was more technically difficult.

== What the evidence shows ==
* '''Judge's statement.''' According to an ISU official, Le Gougne said immediately after the competition that she had been pressured by Didier Gailhaguet, president of the French Federation of Ice Sports. She later gave varying accounts.
* '''Sanctions.''' The ISU suspended Le Gougne and Gailhaguet for three years and barred them from the 2006 Winter Olympics.
* '''Second gold.''' On February 15, 2002, the IOC and ISU announced that Salé and Pelletier would receive gold medals, while the Russian pair kept theirs. Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze were not found to have done anything wrong.
* '''Investigation.''' The US Federal Bureau of Investigation later charged a reputed Russian organized crime figure, Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov, with conspiring to fix the pairs and ice dancing events; he was never extradited and denied the charges.
* '''Reform.''' The scandal led the ISU to replace the traditional 6.0 scoring system with the International Judging System, which awards points for specific elements and uses anonymized judges' scores, a change that has been both praised and criticized.

== Why it persists ==
Subjective judging makes it hard to separate honest differences of opinion from manipulation, and national blocs of judges had long been suspected of trading votes. The Russian pair's genuine skill also complicated the story.

== Lessons for readers ==
* Subjective scoring systems are vulnerable to collusion.
* Initial official defenses of a result may give way when insiders speak.
* Athletes can be innocent even when the outcome is tainted.
* Scandals can lead to reforms that bring trade-offs of their own.
* Transparency in judging is key to public trust.
