The claim that '''Muslim migrants caused the 2026 French riots''' was made by US President Donald Trump, other Republican politicians and many social media accounts after protests in France over the cost of living and school funding turned violent in mid-October 2026. They described the violence as driven by immigrants, particularly Muslims, attacking a Christian country, and Trump spoke of "burning steeples." An Associated Press fact check found no evidence linking the rioting to immigrants or to religion, and found that no houses of worship had been directly attacked. The "steeple" appeared to be the bell tower of a town hall in Limoges. French President Emmanuel Macron called the claims foolish and part of foreign information manipulation.

== Background ==
Protests began in France in late September 2026 as a student strike over underfunded schools and grew into nationwide demonstrations about the high cost of living, some linked to the "yellow vest" movement of 2018–2019. Most marches were peaceful. Over the weekend of October 17–18, some demonstrations in Paris and other cities turned violent, with masked groups vandalizing property, clashing with police and looting stores. Authorities said at least 3,000 shops were damaged or looted across major cities, and curfews were imposed in parts of several cities. Violence also broke out at protests in Milan, Italy.

== The claim ==
Trump urged Macron to close France's borders and said Europe was finished if it did not. He said the unrest was not about schools but about people coming into countries they hate, and warned of burning steeples and raging fires in France. Kansas Senator Roger Marshall, speaking at a rally with Trump, said radical Islam was the greatest threat to American democracy. Social media posts circulated images and videos said to show migrants rioting, some of which were later shown to be old, from other countries or AI-generated.

== What the evidence shows ==
The AP found the claim that migrants of Muslim heritage were responsible for most of the damage to be unsubstantiated:

* '''No link to immigrants.''' French authorities and police did not link immigrants to the rioting. France does not collect statistics by race, ethnicity or religion and does not publish the identities of people arrested.
* '''No religious targeting.''' The AP found no direct link between the violence and religion, and no houses of worship had been directly attacked. A Jewish community security organization said a Paris synagogue had been damaged in what was believed to be a burglary attempt, and said there was no evidence that businesses were targeted because of their owners' religion.
* '''The "steeple."''' The image of a burning tower appeared to show the 19th-century town hall in Limoges, whose bell tower burned and collapsed during the unrest.
* '''Who was involved.''' French officials, including Macron, blamed radical far-left activists for some of the violence. A Sciences Po Grenoble researcher said the far left was too small to account for violence on this scale and that looting was mainly the work of criminals exploiting the disorder. In Milan, police said rioters included naturalized children of immigrants and foreign nationals, but local officials said more investigation was needed.

On October 21 Macron said that leaders on the other side of the Atlantic, among others, were exploiting France's social tensions, that there had been foreign manipulation of information, and that false claims that France had been invaded by migrants and Islamists were circulating alongside AI-generated images of events that never happened. He called some foreign leaders' comments unacceptable and foolish.

== Why it persists ==
Riots in Europe are frequently framed by commentators abroad through debates about immigration, especially when they occur in France, which has experienced unrest in immigrant-heavy suburbs in the past, notably in 2005 and 2023. That history makes the narrative familiar, even when the facts differ. Viral images, some recycled from other events or generated by AI, can make the narrative seem documented. And leaders can use foreign unrest to make arguments about domestic policy.

== Lessons for readers ==
* Ask what evidence links a group to an event, not just whether the claim fits a familiar narrative.
* Check images of unrest for their origin; many are old, from other places or AI-generated.
* Be aware that some countries, including France, do not publish data on the ethnicity or religion of people arrested.
* Notice when foreign events are used to argue about domestic politics.
* Look for reporting from journalists on the ground and statements from local authorities.
