The claim that '''megalodon sharks still survive in the oceans''' was promoted by the Discovery Channel in 2013. ''Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives'', which opened that year's Shark Week, used actors playing scientists, fabricated footage and a fake Nazi-era photograph to suggest that megalodon, a giant shark known from fossils, still lived. It drew about 4.8 million viewers, then a Shark Week record. A brief disclaimer at the end said that some events and characters were dramatized and that megalodon's existence was still debated, but many viewers did not see it. Scientists and many viewers criticized the network for presenting fiction as a documentary. Megalodon is extinct; fossil evidence indicates it disappeared about 3.6 million years ago.

== What the evidence shows ==
* '''Fossils.''' Megalodon, ''Otodus megalodon'', is known mainly from fossilized teeth and vertebrae. Studies of the fossil record show no evidence of survival into recent times.
* '''Detectability.''' A shark of megalodon's size, estimated at 15 meters or more, lived in coastal waters and would leave obvious evidence, such as bite marks on whales and shed teeth, if it still existed.
* '''Fabrication.''' The special featured fictional scientists and doctored footage. Discovery's disclaimer said that "certain events and characters" had been dramatized.
* '''Network response.''' Discovery defended the program as entertainment. In 2015 a new network president said Shark Week would move away from such fake documentaries.

== Why it persists ==
Many people trust nature channels to present science accurately. The program copied documentary conventions, and its disclaimer was brief and easy to miss. The idea of a surviving monster shark is thrilling and has been popularized by novels and films.

== Lessons for readers ==
* The style of a documentary does not make content factual.
* Check the end credits and disclaimers of dramatic programs.
* Trusted brands can trade credibility for ratings.
* Extinction is established through evidence, and extraordinary survival claims need extraordinary evidence.
