'''''The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe''''' is a 2018 book by Steven Novella et al..

== Summary ==
Steven Novella, a neurologist at Yale School of Medicine, wrote this book in 2018 with his co-hosts of the long-running podcast of the same name, which began in 2005: Bob Novella, Cara Santa Maria, Jay Novella and Evan Bernstein. It is a comprehensive handbook of scientific skepticism, designed to teach readers how to think about claims rather than simply what to believe.

=== Humility about the brain ===
The book begins with what it calls neuropsychological humility: an honest look at the limits of the human brain. Novella explains how perception is constructed rather than recorded, how memory is reconstructed each time it is recalled and is therefore unreliable, and how the brain is wired to find patterns even in randomness. Starting from these limits, the authors argue, is the foundation of good skepticism.

=== The tools ===
The core of the book is a systematic toolkit. It covers metacognition, thinking about how one thinks; a long catalogue of logical fallacies, explained with examples; and the many cognitive biases that lead people astray, from confirmation bias to motivated reasoning. The authors explain the difference between science and pseudoscience, and the ways pseudoscience mimics the appearance of scientific methods.

=== Cases ===
The book applies these tools to a range of historical and modern cases, including episodes where scientists themselves fooled themselves with claims that did not hold up, popular pseudosciences and false medical claims. These examples show how the same mistakes recur across fields.

=== Skepticism in practice ===
The authors argue that skepticism is not cynicism or blanket doubt. It means proportioning belief to evidence, being willing to change one's mind and applying the same standards to one's own beliefs as to those of others. They also discuss how to communicate with people who hold false beliefs, emphasizing respect and patience over ridicule.

=== Relevance to Bullshitopedia ===
This is the most complete modern handbook in the bibliography and works well as a reference for training editors. Its definition of skepticism as proportioning belief to evidence, rather than doubting everything, is a good statement of the site's own stance.
