The claim that no one in Trump's orbit was convicted in the Russia investigation ignores the record of the cases that Mueller's office brought. It is accurate that none of them was convicted of conspiring with Russia.
What the evidence shows
- Several Trump associates were convicted or pleaded guilty. Campaign chairman Paul Manafort was convicted of tax and bank fraud in 2018 and pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges. National security adviser Michael Flynn and campaign aide George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI. Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about the Moscow project. Roger Stone was convicted in 2019 of making false statements, obstruction and witness tampering.
- Many of those cases are not about Russia. Manafort's convictions involved his Ukraine consulting work. Cohen's most serious crimes involved campaign finance and taxes, in a separate New York prosecution.
- Presidential clemency changed the outcomes. Trump pardoned Flynn, Papadopoulos and Manafort, and commuted then pardoned Stone.
- Russians were indicted. Mueller's office also indicted 13 Russians tied to the Internet Research Agency and 12 GRU officers, who remain outside U.S. reach.
- No American was convicted of conspiring with Russia. This is the accurate version of the slogan, and it matches the report's conclusion that conspiracy was not established.
Why it persists
The statement "no collusion" is accurate narrowly, but is used to suggest nothing criminal was found. Some critics, on the other hand, inflate the convictions into a proven conspiracy.
Lessons for readers
- Ask which crime a person was convicted of, and whether it is the crime in the slogan.
- Pardons are acts of mercy or politics, not findings of innocence.
